-- Kill Bill: Volume 1 - WORKPRINT - OPiUM (http://forum.vcdq.com/showthread.php?threadid=29654)

Posted by xer0mark on 10-13-2003 09:20 AM:

A few things on my mind

First, I heard that the black and white was to keep the R Rating. Quentin said in an interview with the Chicago Tribune, that if America could handle the violence he'd show it but they can't. I also read that in Europe, they get the same version but its in full color. In Japan, they get a completely different scene with even more blood and gore.

Second, apparently if you hear the bride's name, it ruins volume 2. Kill Bill wasn't supposed to be 2 movies it just got too long so it had to be split. The decision was made after the film was shot.

Thirdly, I saw the film twice in theaters already and after seeing the VCD, i can say that the audio track on the VCD is NOT the final mix from the film. You can hear like a shotgun sound when gogo opens the blade on her ball and chain. Some of the SFX are pretty bad. Also alot of the foley work is missing and the music and the overal mix is very poor.

Video - The framerate does stutter. Probably a crappy pulldown when encoding or something. Its pretty obvious in pans. Also the picture is a bit dark. In some shots Sofi's black outfit completely blends into the black backround.

Audio - Aside from the unfinished mix, it has that really tinny digital sound you get from poor sampling rate conversions and encoding.

In my opinion, its not a bad VCD, but its not a good VCD. I would've liked to see this WP as an SVCD with a little better job on the encoding side. cuz it did come from a DVD source.

Yay, finally watched it. Video is standard VCD icky-ness. Audio's okay. Great movie, though ... despite my usual distaste for T-a-r-a-n-t-i-n-o.

6.5/7/8 (absolute scale)

As has already been mentioned (but apparently ignored), the black & white bits were put there intentionally so that the movie could sneak under the NC-17 rating and only get an R.

the anime part was implemented to avoid the nc-17 rating. (having a 11 yr old killing someone)

The beeping of the Brides name was always intended and was in the script that became available on the net over a year ago.

Sound is good but not perfect. It's much better than the tcr release. I also can't complain about the video. This release will do me just fine until I go and buy the DVD. I hope the asian release leaks pronto. I really want to see the differences and I doubt it'll be out on DVD in the West. BTW, the European version is all black and white in the restaurant fight sequence like in the US.

Loved the movie, loved the style, cinematography, fight choreography, blood, gore, and the bitches getting it on.

it's sound/video/movie right?

I'd go with

7/7/9

Not bad quality at all. From sample the audio seems pretty good, and video appears to be in good shap too.
Video:7.5
Audio:7

The only bullshyt that only on the workprint, is the countdown between scenes.

Wow!! Insightful second post. I think Ramp was being sarcastic.
But then again if you had more then two post's under your
belt (or you had some common sense) you would have
realized that.

The release is pretty damn close to flawless. I didn't mind
the reel changes. The encoding could have been a bit better but
who cares! This was released the day before it hit theaters.
I had it Thursday and as tempted as I was to look at it, I wouldn't.
I had to see this in theaters and I will be going back again.

That's the thing I hate about Tarantino. He makes films that keep
you coming back over and over to see them. GREAT MOVIE!!

Btw- I did actually meet Tarantino a few years back in NYC. He
was a very cool guy.

video- clear..not full of colors, but can see all
audio- out of sync. i thought my dvd player was skipping half the time. i should have scored this a 5 cuze it was so annoying thruout the flick..so bad maybe a nuke could have been given.

movie- a big letdown!! i myself do not like swordfighting and kung-fu style flicks. i go for flicks with a good storyline, funny, and believable scenes. once i saw uma flying up onto walls (like crouching tiger and once upon a time in mexico) i lost interest. all this flick is a hack and slash movie..very few lines..and what happened to bill? she only killed like 3 out of the 5 on the list...another letdown..skip this one and see school or rock instead!!

Well thought it was about time I added my reviews

Video is not bad for a workprint the colours are slightly washed out but overall clarity is not bad, its right what people say about the framerate, its not good. Jerkyness all over the shop and also adds to a slight sync'ing problem with the audio.

The audio I was pretty impressed with, nice clear sound. as mentioned before it does have the everso faint digital hiss to it, but its no biggie!

As for the movie.....it rocked!, ive just got back from seeing it at the cinema and now im gonna put this release on to watch! Great fight scenes, excellent score, top performance from uma, overall a kick ass movie weve come to expect from Tarantino!

7/8/9.5 (cos i gotta wait till feb to see the next part, otherwise 10)

i agree with xero. Alot of subtle things are missing from this release. I saw it in the theaters first. when she sees that young boy in the restaurant and tells him to go to his momma, shes supposed to sigh outloud. thats just one of the examples. But thats not it. Maybe i should document all the differences.

I guess they wont make a very big deal if you just wanna see the movie, but nevertheless, it'll be slightly different from the theatrical released one.

Good movie.
not sure if this is where is where i should post this but i will do it anyway.
It might just be my copy but what happend to the fight scene where Uma is fighting some old guy and he jumps over her then jumps onto her sword and balances on the sword then does a back flip, like in the trailer. Was this cut out the film or is it just my copy.
Anyway i liked the film

my god

since when do you people WHINE so much. first off, just from your comments i can tell most of you have no idea how any of this works.
but more importantly, just relax, watch the movie.
it was released by opium, which, as mentioned before is a bullshyte group nudder group.
PLUS its a workprint, so it not a dvd rip.
i will explain again
workprint =/ dvd rip
also, its a vcd. if you want quality, go dvdr. or at least svcd
you all knew what you were downloading when you got this.
so far so good, 7/7/not done.
this release is completly watchable, and i'll enjoy watching it again once i got a dvd rip, and comparing the two.
just download it, cds cost 30 cents each, and your bandwidth aint gonna get used by your mother checking her emails
peace

Posted by yorkshire on 11-03-2003 12:11 PM:

7/7/8, certainly watchable

Posted by propr`one on 11-07-2003 01:55 AM:

most watchable, you can grasp the film from this rls.

framerate is filled, aka empty frames
for those who dont understand, its like taking a 10 fps source and converting it to 29.97.

but it is quite good, countdowns dont disrupt watchablility
vid 7
aud 7
movie 9
