Capturing VCR > MPEG

Hi, I have a Ati Radeon 9200SE with TV-Out & want to capture a vcr/vhs tape onto a mpeg file on my pc.

I tried using ati's MMC & what a load of shi t that is. Is there any software to do this OR what Video Card to you recommend?

A graphics card with TV-out is no good, you need one that has a video in as well (VIVO or All-in-wonder) or a separate TV card.

Software: VirtualVCR, VirtualDub, AVIO, etc. are more powerful but harder to use than the software that comes with the card.

Also watch out for macrovision copy protection on the tapes.

IUvcr is great for it too, but you'll need some way of getting it into the pc, as mentioned.

do you have a DVcam with analogue in?

I have got a camera, but I want to capture VHS tapes.

Ok, i think it has vivo.... s video?

I plugged in the s video into the PC, then plugged the yellow phono lead into the VCR. Downloaded that VirtualVCR & it said "you have no capture devices"...lol.

But i do, its a ati radeon 9200SE.

Any Idea's?

If it IS the VIVO version (cos it is optional) then you'll need the correct drivers/suite off the ATI website.

MMC is for ATI's all in wonder line. It probably won't be very useful if you're trying to use it with the wrong card.

If you don't have VIVO (see above) then you can run the tape through you digi-cam (via RCA cables) and into your computer with the firewire....maybe. I did that with a Sony once.

Otherwise, that TS of the VCR Tape ain't a bad idea!

If you're using Win XP and you have the VIVO version of the card then the video capture drivers would have been installed automatically.

I'm 90% sure you will need to buy a separate PCI capture card.

If you don't want a card with built-in TV tuner (e.g. if you only want to capture from your VCR), you don't have to spend a lot to get a decent card. For example http://www.leadtek.com/multimedia/w..._vc100xp_1.html

My VCR capture came this morning & it works a treat.... Can only capture DVD movie's through the player though. Tried to plug in the VCR & its just shows a blue screen, although it might be my VCR, its pretty ancient, lol.

Maybe... maybe not.

So you can do an analogue capture from a DVD player (pointless as you can do a direct digital rip, but at least it shows your card and software are working). How's the player connected, s-video cable?

How do you then connect your VCR? Do you change to the composite input? Can you see a picture when playing a home-recorded tape or just watching TV through the VCR?

Hi, I plug the yellow ended cable into the PC & the other end of the yellow ended cable into my VCR. Not using S-Video.

No picture what so ever, tried a home-recorded tape & a video movie & just a blue screen comes up. On monday I am going to buy a new VCR, Im pretty sure its got something to do with my VCR, its a schneider piece of cheap shit i bought for £15.99 a while ago, lol. I will let you know if it works on monday, thanks for the help !
