-- Anonymous ISP Address/Throttling (http://www.vcdhq.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=81611)

Anonymous ISP Address/Throttling

Is there anyway to achieve complete anonymity on the Net? Must have read umpteen Google articles that basically say if you do this, that, and then something else you lessen your risk of being identified. Well if it’s possible I want no risk. Also my ISP throttles for about 8 hours per day Bittorent traffic. Believe the process used is deep packet inspection and the software is Traffic Manager. I get roughly 5% of my download speed. Is there any way to circumvent? From what I found Google again was not very helpful.

You can never be totally anonymous on the internet. As long as you are connected, SOMEONE can ultimately track you back. There are plenty of anonymizer packages and websites that let you be as close as you can be, with varying success, but you can NEVER be TOTALLY anonymous.

As for circumventing the throttling, I have yet to hear of anyone successfully making such a work around. My advice is unhelpful, switch ISPs

My advice is slightly more useful... Don't use Torrents, use an alternative method, unless your ISP just caps based on usage and doesn't target torrent traffic.

Thanks to both of you. EJO thought that was the case but good to get confirmation. NS the exact words of the ISP “...Peer to peer softwares are not supported by us as they increase the bandwidth consuming". Will add the other ISP not only throttles but charges for "excessive" bandwidth usage. Not difficult to discern what is being referred to.

I would say finding a random mac address from a public computer, clone it and find a wifi hotspot to connect, boot up into a livecd distro of an operating system, doing what you would like to do and tunneling through something like Tor onion routing, then leaving with haste would be the closest to being totally anonymous on the web. I think that's a few massive overkill steps for something you're looking for though.

What if you're too lazy to find alternative methods ?

Do i just ready my bunghole for the inevitable prison raping ?

I'm with virgin media , if that helps.

Don't VM provide access to Newsgroups? Problem solved

VM throttle whatever means you are using, be it newsgroups or torrents. I use newsgroups with an SSL encrypted connection but it still slows to a snails pace after 5pm.

When it was NTL the retention was a week and completion shite plus most decent groups weren't included. e.g anything to do with movie, dvd, porn etc.
I doubt it's changed much.
There are pretty good usenet service providers that are cheap as chips.

Do what I did. Complain, Complain, Complain, Complain, and then they fix it. I use Usenet and they did cut it off (100%( around 2am! And this is meant to be unlimited!

But Complaining works

TOR will be the way to go for anonymity

Also... to combat BT throttling look into a linux distro and editing the IP tables. Might be able to do the same with Windows... but so far only seen linux.

Posted by wanksock on 07-14-2008 10:50 AM:

from what ive seen, people are leaving virgin media in droves. and im one of them!

i'd encourage anyone else with an alternative choice to do the same. they throttled between 4 and 9pm if you exceed 3GB, and now they throttle between 10am and 3pm if you exceed 6GB too... it'll only get worse.

i just signed up with bethere... 24mbit / 2.4mbit, unthrottled & unlimited.

Posted by bartleby on 07-14-2008 04:45 PM:

Anyone know what my internet speed should be ? Im running virgin medias XL 20Mb package , and this is what speedtest.net says...

Although usually when ive tested it with that its been 2000 ? So im not sure what i should be getting. Unless speedtest have just change the way it's displayed.

I had major problems with BT, slowed right down between 6 and midnight. Try calling their indian call centres to explain the problem. Its perhaps the most frustrating experience of my life. They have no idea about heavy users having their lines restricted. They just take your details, run a line test and tell you that your line is fine and there must be a problem with your pc.

After going through this procedure several times and me still saying I was having problems they refer it to the line fault department. They then ring me 2 weeks later to see if i am still having problems, I say yes, months of complaints go by and then they ring me to tell me my local exchange has just been upgraded and that I should no longer have problems. I'm still getting slow speeds so by this point I want to kill someone. I know my line is being intentionally restricted because the problem happens the same time every day, yet these indian morons have absolutely no idea about it. I finally ask for a number for an English call centre, surprisingly they give me one, I ring them up and they tell me within the first minute that my line is restricted because of my heavy use. Now before being told this I had been complaining for months to the Indian call centre, luckily for me they retardedly wrongly admitted to my slow speeds coming from a faulty exchange, this resulted in a refund for the entire time I had been complaining, from the day of my first complaint to the day they said they had fixed the exchange, totalled about a whole quarters bill. Naice.

Got my restriction lifted by feigning ignorance and promising to keep my usage down, got restricted again the following month. Its not so bad now, still some traffic shaping in place during peak hours but its never below 1.5mbps.

Found some old results...

Ive been thinking ive had a good connection thinking i should be getting 2000kb when infact i should be getting 20,000kb

Ive no idea why it has changed today but if it does'nt stay this way , i'll be getting rid of the shit. Look at those past results , ive been getting less than 10% of what im paying for , fucking rip off cunts.

Although several years away, some good news was announced by BT today.

They announced plans to roll out fibre-based, super-fast broadband to as many as ten million homes by 2012. The £1.5 billion programme will deliver a range of services with top speeds of up to 100Mb, with the potential for speeds of more than 1,000Mb in the future.

The major reason for the throttling is the network that DSL runs over. Companies have been using the same infrastructure that was only originally put in place to handle basic telephony for years now but are continuing to add more users to it which has resulted in over-utilisation. To avoid complete loss of service for people, the've had to implement traffic policing / throttling to guarantee that everybody gets a connection (even if it's only 0.5Mb instead of 8Mb - which is what I get limited to every single evening from 6pm - 12am).

Posted by Linnets on 07-15-2008 09:23 PM:

Does anyone know whether I am able to utilise the fibre that I had installed up to my pabx switchboard at work a number of years ago?

It was blown through from the road to run our isdn 30 voice and data traffic. This was back in the day when isdn was prety much the fastest data connection that was available for anything like a sensible amount of money.

So is this fibre optic cable any use to me for a broadband connection nowadays?

If you can't get a new ISP try to change to internet via satellite.

You can get good speeds, but very high speeds are expensive. Try to google, it i read about it few years ago and it was expensive, now it seems to have gotten cheaper.

I have satellite now and would not recommend it at all. I don’t know about service in other parts of the world, but in the states, it blows.

Yes, it is way better than dial up, but the lag times are horrible.

Pinging www.l.google.com [64.233.167.104] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 64.233.167.104: bytes=32 time=1747ms TTL=238
Reply from 64.233.167.104: bytes=32 time=1227ms TTL=238
Reply from 64.233.167.104: bytes=32 time=1227ms TTL=238
Reply from 64.233.167.104: bytes=32 time=1228ms TTL=238

As you can see 1227 ms average. Ugh. But no other option for me at the moment.

Forget gaming, all is good for is browsing the net and email. Oh, don’t forget the FAP (Fair access policy) I have a 7 GB cap every month. If I go over, they shut me down to dialup speeds.

Satellite should be your last option. Just my 2cents.

isnt it something to do with internet being mega bits rather than bytes, so you can roughly divide by 10 and see what speed you shoudl be getting (u can use 8 but you have to take into account overheads)....so a 20 mb connection should pull about 2 meg on average...my 19meg reaches 2.3meg download speeds
sometimes for a sustained period!

^^^^ correct. If it was referring to his actual line speed, it would have said 20Mb/s (note the lowercase "b").

I'd say that where the speed is reported as 0.2MB/s is where he's exceeded the Virgin download limit and his line has then been capped for x hours. Virgin is generally quite consistent unless they are limiting you (or at least it was when I had the 20Mb/s package... I would usually get 2.3MB/s download).

Posted by bartleby on 07-16-2008 10:14 PM:

Ive changed that graph to MB to show people how much I was losing , you can switch it between MB ,Mb , KB ,Kb.

If i change it to Mb it shows my best result as 19.19Mb. Which for a 20Mb line is awesome , but those past results are shockingly shit.

Ive not really downloaded any more Or less than what i usually do and ive NEVER had speeds as good as what im getting now.

So no idea why it's suddenly changed but now i'm aware of it if it drops that dramatically again they'll be gettiing an angry phonecall.

While TOR is decent for anonymity, it sux for speed. Check out the network map and keep hitting 'Use A New Identify' until you get a connection with decent speeds.
