Well my parents have had their computer for I would say 5, if not 6 years, and the HDD is acting funny. I can't remember the exact message it gives, but it would seem that it's come to the end of its' life.

One way I've found to get an old drive suddenly working again is to go out and buy a new one. A slightly less expensive alternative is to do a low level reformat. This will mark any damaged sectors as unusable and the OS will ignore them in future.

hard drive age varies, and warranties vary as well. drives all used to come with 5 year warranties, then they went to 3, now some drives only give you a year.
so in general, in a computer that never moves, doesnt experience power surges, and isn't constantly spinning? you could get 5-7 years... in a constantly spinning tossed around computer with no sides on the case and poor house wiring causing it to power off abruptly.... keep your receipt.
