Avi barely plays; won't convert; frustrated!

Dear Folks,

Here's a problem I've not experienced before. Perhaps someone can help.

I've downloaded a movie in avi format. It will not play in RealPlayer or Windows Media Player 9.0, but will play just fine in the VLC Media Player.

I want to convert the avi file to DVD format, but all of my usual avi converter programs crash when they try to convert the file (#1 Video Converter; Super Video Converter; Cucosoft's AVI to DVD converter, etc.

I've downloaded this 1.2 gig movie twice, with the same results.

Any suggestions?

Hi, do you have the right codec installed?

download this: http://www.headbands.com/gspot/gspot221.exe
this will tell you what codec it is & if it have been installed.

According to GSpot, I have the right codecs. And I suspect GSpot is right, for I am able to play the avi movie just fine on several players (but not all).

Since my original post I downloaded DVDSanta. It too could play the movie...but it too crashed when trying to convert the avi file to DVD format.

I use Canopus Procorder for most of my format converting needs, hasnt choked yet... cept for .wmv's, for that i use RiverPast Video Cleaner...

A quick net search shows Canopus Procorder costing $500, so that's out for me!

a quick net search shows that downloading movies is illegal, so thats probably out too...

Still sounds to me like a codec issue. I had a similar problem that I just put up with (used VLC) until I formatted my pc. After formatting I only put on divx5 and an xvid codec (Along with an ac3 codec for audio), the problem .avi's now played perfectly. If possible remove some of the hundreds of video codecs you likely have on and install just a few.

Oh and if you've installed a codec pack, get rid of that straight off.

Create an "interfacing" encode

I presume by "DVD format" you mean elementary streams.

Load the AVI into VirtualDub and then recode it to another AVI format, or one that you KNOW your converters will like. Once done, then try converting to elementary streams. If you have a LOT of HDD space, try uncompressed RGB video & PCM audio, so that the codec question is neutralised.

I prefer to encode to a combined MPEG system format so I can easily check for audio desync. DVDlab (what I use) will demux when you load the movie.

BTW, Canopus Procoder 2 is *magic*... the best out of all I've tried. Get it if you can.
