Create an "interfacing" encode
I presume by "DVD format" you mean elementary streams.
Load the AVI into VirtualDub and then recode it to another AVI format, or one that you KNOW your converters will like. Once done, then try converting to elementary streams. If you have a LOT of HDD space, try uncompressed RGB video & PCM audio, so that the codec question is neutralised.
I prefer to encode to a combined MPEG system format so I can easily check for audio desync. DVDlab (what I use) will demux when you load the movie.
BTW, Canopus Procoder 2 is *magic*... the best out of all I've tried. Get it if you can.
