as a short time customer service guy for samsung's home entertainment division i got a lot of calls about hdmi and high def.
the official line was that it was a digital signal, and didnt go through a lossy digital to analog to digital conversion like component video did, and was therefore better quality.
i couldn't see a visual difference between the two, so my answer was:
the only thing hdmi is good for is consolidating cables (5 comp plus audio cables down to 1 cable) and that blu-ray and hd-dvd will be using HDCP protection that COULD POSSIBLY lower resolutions for component output to 720p and only allow 1080p through HDMI to HDCP capable displays.
and yeah, the usb on the front is just for playing photos, songs, or videos off a thumb drive.
