Owning a Pro-BSL guy on the issues.

Most wont care about this, but its an important issue to me right now as BSL is spreading fast. This is botchalism from another forum, and his take on the issue of BSL (Breed Specific Legislation) followed by my response.

Well I think we can all agree that the only thing worse then pitbulls are the Welsh . I think with any dog, like any human, has the capacity to snap. I've heard many stories of the ideal pitbull, loved, obediance trained, and the like, yet unexpectedly snaps. The black lab that bit me at the dog park had gone wild because he'd been through 2 robberies in one week. My Maltese is a pretty mean little guy and when he turned on his short man syndrome and bullied the dog, the dog SNAPPED. I had to intervene, as it was obvious the lab was out for blood. It grazed my hand with its teeth and I kicked it, and it immediatly retreated. My dog had a knick as did I which was bleeding but quickly stopped. Had this been a pitbull, would I have been able to give it a swift kick and expect release. You tell me. Its in their breed to never let up once they bite down. I mean, so what, they're 5 times better in temperment. I don't care if a dalmation bites 5, 10, 20 times more, it will never equal 1 pitbull attack. So a little Pomeranian can kill an infant, a mongoose can kill an infant. I love my Maltese like a child, but would I leave him alone with an infant? No. Do infants roam the streets in danger of a small dog killing them, no. Do adults and children walk the streets in danger of a pitbull attack, yes.

Let me ask you why did you specifically pick a pitbull for a family pet. There are so many other ideal family dogs, specifically bred for human companionship and nothing else. Why pick a dog with a pedigree for violence, I mean why? I think even caring owners have some subtle desire to fufill the masculinity allure of the dog, don't you think?

You mention that your website is against irresponsible ownership. How do you combat it? If all you do is say "its bad", "don't fight pitbulls please', then of course its ludicrous to think you'll make an impact. If not BSL, then what? You don't think limiting ownership privileges of pits and rotts from novice owners is feasible? You said pitbulls need structure and rules in their life, do you think the average joe 6 pack will provide this? It wouldn't completely stop the flow, limiting it this way, but it would keep it out of easy access of criminals. Yes gun control doesn't mean criminals don't have guns, however, its harder to get and IF caught with them Do not pass go, do not collect $200. I guess my biggest point is, yes guns will end up in the wrong hands, but is making it readily available at the corner store for a $100 the answer?

AND NOW MY RESPONSE

Firstly, my breed is less likely to bite a human, they pass w/ higher temperment tests for a reason. Temperment tests document the dogs personality, including aggressive behavior towards strangers, children, other dogs/animals, and food bowls. The Pit Bull passes this Temperment Test with an amazing 83.5%. The Cocker Spaniel passes with 81.5%, and the Collie (Lassie) passes with a score of just 79%. Yes they were bred to fight other dogs, but during these fights the owners would be in the ring with the dogs. These dogs knew never to bite a human, for if they did they were killed. This being the case the pits that bit were killed thus taking them out of the reproduction cycle thus removing those traits from the breed. By doing this they have created a dog aggressive, people friendly breed. Not only that many of the fighters were treated like shit, yet never turned on their owner nor the other people in the "pit" during the fights. As mentioned above it was bred into the dogs that biting a human = death. Animals just know stuff, its called instincts and its created by years and years of evolution.

I specifically picked a Pit Bull (AmStaff Terrier) because i have grown up around them all my life, they have been in my family for generations. My brother breeds them, and gave me the pick of the litter. The reasons this breed is so popular is because they are known to be super loyal dogs, that give 110% at instruction you give them (which irresponsible owners exploit) and they show you more unconditional love then your average breed. Overall they are great companions, my GoTTi is my traveling companion, bodyguard, best friend, and child all in one. I say bodyguard because i have trained my dog to listen to my every command. Though being a responsible owner i would never misuse that power, only for the protection of me & my famiy in only the most needed situations.

The way to combat irresponsible ownership is to dramatically increase the relatively light weight penalties we have now for dog fighting / animal cruelty / animal neglect. It makes no sense to kill so innocent dogs, taking away best friends and even family members for some because of a few bad owners who had no business raising the dog in the first place. Also make it harder to buy a Pit Bull, which would mean stopping these puppy mills and irresponsible breeders. Hell even have owners take a course or something. This breed is only, i repeat, ONLY for those who will raise it properly and give the dog structure and a base of common basic ideas (rules). The problem is the Gov. is lazy so instead of being proactive on the issue, they would rather just say "fuk it" (excuse my language) just ban them and kill any more that we catch. It sure is alot easier than saying "you know what? lets go out there and get the heartless scumbags who use their dog as a decoration or worse a fighter", thus creating a bad dog.Im not saying there are not instances where the dog is just not right in the head because like any breed ( or animal for that matter, including human) there are mentally screwed up creatures, but this is a factor of life. You dont go out and kill off a whole breed because of a flaw in life.

The problem with your gun control analogy is that they are just putting a set of standards in order to purchase a fire arm, where'es they are just flat out BANNING pit bulls. That means that any dogs brought into the community afterwords is illegal regardless of its training, temperment, or backround. It gets euthanized simply for being the wrong breed. In Denver, 1,075 dogs identified as pit bulls were euthanized from May 2005 though May 2006, thats almost 3 dogs killed a day just for being pit bulls. This is unacceptable. I hope i opened your eyes to some realities to BSL. Please dont ever think that Breed Specific Legislation is a list of restrictions and standards to own a pit bull because its not. It is a FLAT OUT BAN! NO you can not own this breed under ANY circumstances unless it was registered before the ban date. Ok? So what happens after that last generation of Pits die out? Extinction buddy, thats what.

I hope you can see the other side of the story. Our side, the responsible owners who have special relationships with their dogs. All i ask it that you better make sure you got the right enemy in your crosshairs before you pull the trigger on a whole breed.

Negative, its because i care. Im standing up for what i believe in. Give it a try sometime, it creates character. I fight for what i love, i love my dog, and on the bigger scale i love this breed. You couldnt possibly understand the 100% unconditional love, dedication, and loyalty this breed has for its owner without actually owning one and having the experience. Its all good though, keep letting the government do what they want, no worries right? Just keep quiet and allow them to just make all the decisions as you shuffle through your daily life with your head in your ass, unaware what direction your community is headed and when. Im sure itll all turn out ok right?

ok, first of all.

Is your dog an amstaff or pb?

If you are defending the amstaff then there is reason to.

The pb as you know, was bred purely for rings.fullstop

they were NOT I repeat NOT breed for a family to love and expect to be able to be walked by any family member any time of the day.

fat chance

You said in your response to ban and penalise the illegal rings.

But they were banned a long time ago, so in fact there is no need for the pb to still be breeding dangerous, yes, dangerous dogs.

if rings were still around then Im sure many would be owning them.

the dogs need for a good fight, is not what people would like to see in a dog.

My boy loved people, children, and a rabbit, but I could not let him near any dog that he didn't grow up with him.

The point the bloke was trying to say is something you admit to and that is ....pound for pound the breed is a machine of maximum proportion (apbt)

You cant check out the jaw pressure square inch for the dog in comparison to the next, but they don't let go, other dogs will.

Good luck with you're attempt to save the breed, but there are more families out there that don't trust the dogs in comparison to the ones that do.

seems we visit the same site .........

ATTS Breed Statistics
as of December 2003
Breed Name Tested Passed Failed Percent
American Pit Bull Terrier 446 374 72 84%
American Staffordshire Terrier 457 380 77 83%

Alternatives to Breed Speficic Legislation:

1) Enforcement of generic dangerous dog laws, laws that hold owners accountable for the actions of their dogs regardless of breed. Almost every city in the U.S. already has this kind of legislation. If a dog bites or attacks someone, the owner is legally responsible, and restrictions are placed on the "guilty" dog. Why is breed-specific legislation necessary if there are already legal means in place to punish irresponsible owners and put restrictions on dogs that are proven to be aggressive?

He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You are his life, his love, his leader. Hw will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion.
--Anonymous

2) Enforcement of leash laws. Let's be real strict about this. Tickets should be handed out like candy to individuals who disobey this law. Fine owners who let their dogs run loose or fail to keep them in enclosures that they cannot escape from. Let's have a 3-strikes and you're out law for people who refuse to keep their dogs under control. Use the money collected from these fines to fund community dog safety and responsible ownership programs.

3) Stop making excuses for animal cruelty, neglect, and irresponsible ownership. There need to be huge fines for those involved in any inhumane or irresponsible activity with animals.

4) Require an owner education class prior to allowing someone to own a dog. We require drivers to pass a driving test and immigrants to take a citizenship test. Teaching people about their responsibilities as dog owners is just as important, and yet, very few pet owners bother to seek education before or after getting a dog.

5) Encourage or even require people to spay or neuter pet dogs. In many cases, aggression can be significantly reduced or eliminated by neutering a dog. Most dog bites come from unneutered male dogs.

6) Teach people how to avoid dog bites. Many dogs bite out of fear or from provocation. Teaching people the best way to avoid a confrontation with a dog will keep everybody, including the dog, safe and happy.

7) Require people to socialize and train their dogs. Socialization as a puppy is one of the best ways to reduce aggression in dogs. Training reinforces the owner's status as "top dog" and reduces the likelihood of owning a dominant or aggressive dog.

Breed-specific legislation is pointless and unjust. The OWNERS should be responsible for the actions of their dogs, not the dogs themselves! Responsible dog ownership and an educated populace are the keys to eliminating confrontations between dogs and humans

My dog is 100% AmStaff, though as you know the john q public throws all 3 breeds (APBT, AST, ST) in the same category, Pit Bull. The reason why i defend all 3 is because the way i see it the owners of all 3 breeds are in the same boat.

It's love baby!

Just out of couriousity, do you have to carry a bond/insurance on your pitbull? Here in the states, including Columbus, you have to carry special insurance if you own a pitbull (as defined by the statue). 100,000 per dog. I don't know of this being the case with any other breed, though I could be wrong. Just something to think about. Personally I can't stand the fuckers, and see no need for them whatsover.

Michael Vick might see it otherwise. . .

I live in the states, and yes my dog is covered. Its very easy to get and anyone who owns any large canines should have it. Most do being that its just plain old homeowners or renters insurance which covers this. Mine is 100,000 although they can be anywhere from 100k to 4 or 500k. And they insure alot more then just your dog, i wouldnt call it "special". But anyways i told them the truth that it was an amstaffy, they did not discriminate against me or anything. All over the phone very convenient.

Personally i cant stand ashley simpson, the new ninja turtle cartoons, and pecan pie, that doesnt mean i think they should be legally banned.

Edit::Fuk that scumbag mike vick and his asshole brother.
