Review: Blue Crush (2002)
Blue Crush
imdb link : ?0300532
imdb rating : 5.6/10 (1,256 votes)
theres only a few commercial films about surfing.. probably the most famous being Point Break, and thats not really a surfing film, just a film that happens to have people surfing in it. Blue Juice is a british film starring Ewan McGregor (amongst others) which took a more gritty and realistic approach to the surfing ideal.
and now we get the similarly titled "Blue Crush". from the very first second you start watching, you know that realism is pretty much thrown away, and its just a 'feel good' movie. fair enough, i can handle that, but it'll probably put some people off im sure.
ok, the story.. well it was never going to be complex. girl nearly drowns in accident (which is never really explained other than thru the same flashback sequence thats overshown thru out the movie) 3 years previous, girl enters surfing contest, boys think girl is a 'barbie', girl falls in love with some football player and pushes contest aside, girl regains confidence to enter competition. its not shakespeare, but that doesn't make it bad.
the main thing about this film is the supreme photography. sure it could be classed as "MTV style" but that doesn't make it bad. some of the in water shots are fabulous, and it amazes me how well they were able to pull off most of the surf shots. now im no surf expert, but those are some pretty damn big waves, and whoever was in them (whether actress or stunt double) did a fantastic job, especially considering some of the bails. the movie WORKS. so eye candy (hey, this is a movie about surf *girls* dont forget too!) is awesome. storyline is average but not pretending to be something else, and the acting is of a decent enough standard.
personally, i enjoyed the film, i think the average imdb score is a bit low, as compared to a lot of the other 'popcorn flicks' recently, this seems oscar worthy, and hell its a short movie that is pulled off well.
the ending is better than 99% of the others out there whilst not being particularly inspired, but at least it doesn't fall into the usual trap of teen films and shows the screenplay was written with a bit more care than the usual dross we're forced to watch.
few criticisms in the fact the last 15mins seems a bit "samey", the same events seem to occur a few times in a row which is a bit annoying, but hey! who cares. just watch it once, stick it in the pile and pull it out sometime in the future whilst bored.
7/10 . Definitely worth a try. You'll know within the first 10minutes if this isn't the movie for you.
