say what? movie industry losing $$ to piracy?
think about it. nightline ran a special not too long ago about media piracy, claiming the movie industry has their panties in a bunch because people know how to get movies off the net. if you asked me, the industry gains money instead of losing it--now hear me out.
we all know that pirated movies are at least reduced in quality in some way. many of which have significant downsampled picture and audio streams, exept for some dvd-rs. even on the dvd-rs it's usually a dvdscreener with warnings strewn throughout the rls. either way, the point is youre not getting the full quality movie. now let me ask you how many people download a movie so they don't have to buy it? think about it, i seriously doubt anyone downloads a dvdscreener rip and then decides just because he got that that he won't buy the dvd when it comes out. i'd bet dollars to pay that almost everyone who pirates movies actually buys the movie when they come out--the only point to downloading them is to see them in the 3 month period when you can't see them or buy them, and for bragging rights to your friends
so how does the industry GAIN money? well, i like to think of pirated movies as screeners (lol). if i'm not sure if i want to see a movie, i dl it and screen it. on many occasions i've screened a movie and decided it was worth the 8 bucks and went down and saw it. in fact, unless i'm absolutely sure i will like it i never watch a movie without screening it, because way too many times have i gone to a movie to find out i just wasted all that money.
at any rate, the "fact" that the movie industry is losing money due to piracy is at least in part, a lie. any other thoughts?
