Well let me just buck the trend here...
No doubt a great guy. A decent actor, acted in some decent movies. But for a 50yr career and his standing in Hollywood he's made relatively few truly great movies.
Butch/Sting/Luke/Hud/Hustler/Perdition are arguably his 'great' movies and in at least 3 of those he wasn't the lead, he wasn't the main attraction, his wasn't the defining role. And the lead in Peridition, Hanks, has more 'great' titles to his credit in a career 30yrs shorter.
Don't get me wrong, I really do like Newman, there are loads of other movies like Hombre/Verdict/Inferno that are good movies he's played/starred in that I own and enjoy. There are certain actors (Cary Grant, David Niven, Peter Sellars, Alec Guinness, Terry Thomas, Sidney Poitier, Toshiro Mifune, Jack Lemmon, Song Kang-ho, James Stewart, Tadanobu Asano, quite a few others) that make me just pay attention because they're on the screen whether I know anything about the movie or not, and Newman is one of those. But he's more like a top class journeyman footballer - who is regularly decent and has a couple of cracking games every season without ever being a break-the-bank transfer, a Lee Carsley or Gavin McCann - than a Torres or Drogba that you'd gnaw your own fingers off to generate sufficient liquid for them to sign on the dotted line.
