Sure it's nothing new, but it wasn't ment to be. It's ment to scream "We've always been Metillica, no need to go and search for fans in the mainstream."

Thrash metal. Such a fucking change these days from the ordinary crap thats played. I mean, even bands that I used to like have become weak, Less Than Jake anyone? Their latest album, Anthem sounded too commercial-minded to me.

But back to the topic, the title track, St. Anger just roars of teeth-clenching riffs, you'll be singing it in your heads for days!

Maybe this won't please hardcore Metillica fans, but it's a damn good change from the norm of todays music scene.

7/10

From myself, the other "Cc." I fucking hope this wasn't your last review because that was well said and thought out. I wish it came from my own mouth. And yeah, the new Less Than Jake album isn't too appealing, but at least it's better than Good Charlotte.

that's what it feels like to me. Maybe the poor guys are just under too much pressure. Maybe their lead is going through menapause. Who knows, all I hear is:

song start
-distorted guitar riff
-drum
-distorted guitar riff
-drum
-broken up lyrics
-drum
-distorted guitar riff

This is Metallica going all the way back to basics, hell it almost reminds me of Fight Fire with Fire from Ride the Lightning. Minus the full out screaming.

hehe hi ;-)

Thumbs up

i consider myself a diehard Metallica fan, now for my review.. after listening to this for about two full days

I thought Bob Rock had ruined Metallica after i heard the black album. I just didnt like it, at all. Too much country, too soft, not thrash. I just kept listening to their first four, with emphasis on justice for all, which i still think is their greatest album.

I was convinced Bob Rock had raped everything fun out of Metallica when i heard Load.

I cried out loud, painfully, when i heard Reload.

Lets just say i didnt have any hope that St. Anger would be a good album, with their apparent evolution from good ol' thrash to something wholly different, country shit.

I Listened to it. Yay, they redeemed themselves!
Excellent riffs, drums, vocals..
Nine Excellent songs : ( Frantic(!), St.Anger, Some kind of monster, Dirty window, Shoot me again, Sweet amber(!), The unnamed feeling, Purify, All within my hands(!!!!) )

Two Weaker songs that i didnt like much.. : ( Invisible kid, my world)

The biggest gripe i had with this album was the lack of guitar solo's. I counted two, and they were pretty short

What i love about it is how they went back to the trashy, speedy style they had going in their older stuff. And those damn drums! They sound so dirty

7.5/10
Their best cd since ...and justice for all

I havn't sat down and listened to it 'properly' a few times yet, but it definatly doesn't seem to live up to the standards im used to from metallica, the style is a little different than the metallica i like.

Kind of a let down for me really.

My opinion.

Die hard met fan since Master Of Puppets, so don't even think about an unbiased review, but I'll review it from a fan's angle.

As far as I'm concerned, the black album killed metallica in terms of rawness and that "feel" you got when you heard the first 4 albums just wasn't there, it was MTVallica to me. I'm not one of these types who goes off bands when they sell out, christ metallica were huge after puppets, and thats when I loved metallica the most.

St Anger is just what the doctor ordered, angry, full of hate, full of aggression and frustration. I have probably heard it about 10 times from start to finish now, and some of the tracks are still just clicking for me. Love it

FWIW, my ratings

1 Master Of Puppets (shall never be beaten)
2 Ride
=3 Justice
=3 Anger

How much for the ape?

Ok it's obvious that some of you have formed your opinions and I probably can't change them, but what I can do is give you some facts that might help clear some things up....

1) This album was never intended to introduce an earth shattering new sound of rock, I don't know where you heard this but it's simply not true.

What it does do is re-invent Metallica's sound. If you are a fan of Metallica you can't hold that against them. Kill 'em All was a great record but the sound and writing was very different then Ride The Lightning (also a great album). This goes for all their records, if you compare any two Metallica albums the sound and style is very different.

2) Metallica has actually put ALOT of work into this record. Despite the general thought that metallica has thrown this album together they have actually put YEARS of work into it. There is no argument here, it does sound dirty, and I like it, it was meant to sound dirty.

3) It doesn't sound like Metallica, the lead singer is off. This one actually makes me mad, how should Metallica sound? Who are you to say what Metallica should sound like? Theres no question that Jame's (lead vocals) voice is different but you have to realise the last studio album was made over 5 years ago; what do you expect? They aren't as young as they used to be, pushing 40 has an effect on a person.

I am a little disapointed with the lack of solos but hey, what can ya do

Now all I have to say is, I wanna hear Dead Kennedy Rolls!!!

One more thing, when you buy the album you get access to www.metallicavault.com

A site ran by metallica that gives you access to all kinds of soundboard bootlegs free to download... not just samples either FULL CONCERTS!!!

This is great...

It's love baby!

Downloading this album now, will edit to post my opinion. For you young kiddies, I have ever album made by them, and remember going to there first tour back in 1983. Got to meet the band back in 1989 when the came to the local Y where I worked out and wanted to use the free weights. Got a workout towel with all their sigs in marker and even got to workout with them along with 3 other guys who were there, one who had no idea who the hell they were. Seemed like nice guys all around and gave all of us free passes to the show, which meant I had to sell my ticket to a friend, lol. The were the first band to sell out the new Kellogg Arena in my town, and the city gave them the Key to the city.

The best albums have to be the Black album and Ride the Lightning, though Kill em All has some truely hardcore metal riffs.

Hopefully this album won't suck.

Edit: Garbage, most of the tracks anyway. I don't know what they are trying to do now, but please, for the love of God, STOP!

Maybe one or two tracks that are decent, but that's it.

i have almost all of them also, dont have S&M and i think the one after that. Kinda got really into trance. But i still love listening to mettalica from time to time. I think my favorties would have to be the Black album and Master of Puppets.

This album does grow on ya a bit, but still don't live up to their reputation in my opinion.

not to drag it on since the last post is a few days old if im not mistaken, but ive been a fan of metallica for a LONG time. first things first, i thought this cd was absolutely terrible. i think the first mistake was making such a fuss over it, between the nation wide radio promotions (im sure at least half of you have heard the phrase MAYtallica or some other homoerotic offshoot at least once), and the change of their sound (by no means do i think change is always a bad thing, but this one was) i think this album came up way short.

as im listening to fight fire with fire right now, i think of how despite when metallica was considered thrashy and "dirty" their songs always had a sort of rhythm to them, and st anger just sounds like a group of people pounding drums and strumming guitars without any sense of making music or having it flow (i cant think of a good way to explain that, im sure one of you could do better).

as far as the song lengths go, i dont get it. and justice for all was something like 9 or 10 minutes long, but it didnt seem like they were TRYING to make a song that was that long, they just did it and filled it with guitars over drums for a considerable amount of time, yet it was still rhythmical. st anger sounds to me like more pounding and that strumming without a sense of rhythm.

two things that made me think nu-metal: the constant, overwhelming repeating of words and/or short phrases in their songs and the overlapping of voice tracks in songs. see st anger and all the "flush it out"s for an example of both (which shows fleeting moments of a sense of rhythm, then they put the kaibosh on the rhythm with guitars and drums).

as far as not selling out.... if they didnt want to sell out they wouldnt have released a music video. remember the days when they didnt make music videos?? that was more than likely because they didnt want to be on mtv. and it was a horrible video too. come on, beanies??

i wouldnt expect anyone to read this, as its too long and the thread is old, but it sure feels good to say it. at best, i would say the album deserves a 3 out of 10 rating. hopefully they will still kick ass in concert and not play songs off of this cd.

By "Frantic video" I meant Frantic as a record, not the song Frantic.

Do you remember them having the fanbase let alone the financial backing during the KEA days to make a video? Do you remember MTV being a huge musical medium in 1982 during the production of KEA? I'll save you some time, NO!

Sold out? When they started they were young kids, when they said fuck doing videos they were young kids. Metallica didn't understand the music business and when they said fuck doing videos they didn't understand what they were actually doing. When they made One it wasn't because they sold out it was because they understood the music industry alot more and understood music videos were an art form just as much as their music.

Therefor; anyone that says Metallica sold out because they made that video is or has the mentality of a 13 year old.

Think for yourself, don't use that 13 year old disgruntled record store clerk Metallica sucks attitude...

girl

I really didn't like this album.

I'm not a big fan of Metallica by any means but to me, the stuff on this CD just did not sound like Metallica. Actually, St. Anger reminds me of Linkin Park for some reason. Anyway, I skimmed the album once and it was so horrible I just deleted it.

pfff. st anger has nothing on hybrid theory. i enjoy the two linkin park albums more than st anger.
