I don't think I've heard of Plex.

Looking at some screens it does look sexy.

maybe someone can help me out. Running 1080p movies, I know you have to have a decent CPU, but is it more Dependant on the RAM? I currently have a AMD X2 5000+ with 2gb/ram, and with my WinXP lite I can play 1080p movies just fine with VLC. I know people with about the same CPU and can run 1080p MKV files without a problem with any player and they have 4gb's of ram on there systems, So I'm assuming it's a lack of Ram on my end, and not the CPU?

i do not believe that xbmc for mac is in development any longer as i believe they have moved on to plex. never had a problem with xbmc running in full screen, and i have not had a problem with plex either. plex also passes dts through to your reciever without a hitch, something that vlc, and frontrow (even with perian installed) could never seem to accomplish without flaws. while perian made front row more flexible, it would often choke on mkv's when the bitrate got to high. on my 2ghz core 2 duo 1gig macbook, plex streams 1080p mkv from the pc nice and smoothly. the only problem is the macbook fans kick in and become quite noisey. 720p content is almost silent. plex also works with those little apple remotes that accompany most macs.

Ok 1st you need to make sure your video card is capable of handling the 1080p, remember some time ago mother helped me set up the hdmi to the dell dimension 8400 (a pent 4 3.0 4 gig ram)
Well the card couldn't really handle the 1080p and began stuttering and freezing for a sec then if i shut the tv off and left pc on i would either have to take out the hdmi lead to the tv and plug back in or force a reboot

So anyway check that 1st because with the newer machine it plays em flawlessly and that's using win vista x64 with 4 gig dual channel 800mhz i think lol

1080p uses around 36% playing hdtv films be it 720p or 1080p and the cpu is using around 28% so look at what programs u have on your pc and what you have running in the background

Ok i have had the day and night to play with my little baby and make the following review

KMplayer is ok and seems to run fine most of the time but has a few teething problems with 1080p films mainly action

Vlc ok this is also ok but again with 1080p films like Independence Day every so often specially on action and sfx scenes it pixels or freezes for a few seconds or goes out of sync for 10 or so secones

Win media player with the CCCP Codec: this is my fav and no pixel problems with Independence day or Predator as well as Terminator 1 and 2, i sorted the issue with dual audio films, basically the codec which hs tabs on the right tool bar has a video box and an audio box if you right click on the audio box it lets you choose which audio you want as well as if you want the subs on and off

So to summarise i strongly suggest windows media player (can't believe i said that lol) with this cccp codec

http://www.cccp-project.net/

If i run into any isses i will report on this but as i said i have used the system on a good few action rated films like the follwing

Terminator 1080p
Terminator 2.1080p
Predator 720p and 1080p
Gone In 60 Seconds 1080p
Die Hard 720P
Die Hard 2 720P
Cliffhanger 1080p
The 5th Element 720p
The Thing.1080p

All play fine without any hiccup
Also got Commando 720p dual audio but i was disappointed with this for 2 reasons:
1: wasn't the director cut but is uncut with the hand being taken off with the machete and the axe between the legs, in the final showdown on the island.
2) it looks crap picture wise and looks like a normal dvd
So when the directors cut comes out and remastered then it's 1 i shall buy with the 1's i have listed above as they are great films

Ps i have around 500+ gig of blue ray and hd dvd films on my hdd so i'm gonna be a busy boy

I'll be honest and say no mate, i still have them on the pc so, are you going to say i have to uninstall it and reinstall it again after installing what you mentioned above?

To be fair with media player i have had not 1 issue with it except the dual audio (which i sorted out easily) mainly cause English is 2nd take for example Predator 1080p

Spanish audio 5.1 and DTS English, being as i have the 720p and 1080p i can say that the picture is slightly better but the 720p only has 5.1 sound and you notice the difference between the 2 even in the house and i always loved the original predator and is 1 i will buy on blue ray when the remaster the original as 1080p is good but not good enough say compared to the predator 2 720p

I also just got The Final Countdown (1980) which has DTS sound so gonna check that out but i am seriously running out of space 700+ gig of high def in under 10 days so gonna have to strip the audio off the dual mkv files shortly

Thanks for the huge spoiler! Seriously, I have the same release, not watched yet as still waiting for the replacement for my big HDTV. Without being able to check the NFO, what audio format is it? From your description, it sounds like the track has the dynamics of the original 70mm Dolby 6-track, so it's probably mixed from that, rather than the 35mm Dolby stereo mix that's on my old VHS tape. A better 5.1 system is next on my shopping list, however it will have to wait until the little one is old enough to be trusted not to pull speaker stands over...

I only have 1GB of RAM, AMD X2 4200+, and can play 1080p MKVs fine with MPC/Haali/CoreAVC.

Motherfucker!

Thanks for the recommendation on KM Player. Gave it a go after setting up my pc with dvi to hdmi connection to my 42 LCD and receiver and it works great. Found some issues with players like VLC and MPC video not showing on the TV itself (works fine on the monitor) so can any recommend a fix for this?

Bitter, miserable twat.

Could be the way the displays are set up in the video card settings, rather than an issue with the media player.

I remember I had a hard time working out how to set up my Radeon to work the way I wanted it (windowed on the monitor, full screen on the TV). Go into Catalyst CC (if using an ATI card) and play with the theater mode settings.

Motherfucker!

Odd thing is I just noticed today after installing KM Player both are now showing video though not with MWV files. Sticking with KM Player though I have been trying another one I've never seen suggested or heard of, Neuview Media Player. So far it's played everything perfectly except .mov files.

Thought i would do a little update on this.
This week i got the following film

Full.Metal.Jacket: Special.Edition.1987.Blu-Ray.1080p.CEE.VC-1.PCM.5.1

Full.Metal.Jacket.REMASTERED.1987.720p.HDDVD.x264-SEPTiC

Now this comes in at around 22gig, i also have the 720p version (hd dvd) which is around 6 gig, both full rips all intact with extras, not sure if the menu is there or not though as i don't have any tools as of yet to play around with the files, any recommendations?

Obviously F.M.J has been remastered and are great to watch, the 1080p being better on the screen than the 720p slightly, and sound is also a lot better, didn't think there would be much of a difference between hd dvd and blue ray, but there is
I noticed a lot more difference with The Goonies which i have in 720p and 1080p, as well as The Dark Knight, but The Goonies i would say need a clean up as it is the older and as far as i can see not remastered as of yet.
The Dark Knight is a new film and obviously newer technology and mastering the original prints, so gonna be hard to tell the difference

P.s now close to 2tb of hd dvd and blue ray

Prison Break season 1 and 3 are good to watch on blue ray too but as far as i am aware season 2 i yet to come out for some reason, but these are the 1st tv series i have bothered with on blue ray
Also i recommend imax blue ray as well i got a few of them too

P.S forgot to add the Full Metal Jacket 1080p, has full extras too including pvt pile interview

1080p and 720p mkv converted to mp4 looks excellent via a PS3.
I own a few bluray's but the rips look just as sweet.
You can convert mkv retaining it's DTS 5.1 etc, or download a pre muxed PS3 compliant 2-pass mp4.
When converted those 8G mkv's become 4G mp4's so usb sticks and dvdrs are perfect media for saving and playing. also you half your download when downloading the premuxed and saving a hell of a lot of encoding time.

All I burn for myself now is HD, SD is dead to me.
